FNP - The Foundation for Polish Science
Assoc prof. Stanisław Różański, a lecturer of Polytechnic Faculty, who explains complicated physical issues in a very accessible way, confirms that every time. This time his passion and ideas of presenting physical laws were appreciated also by the Foundation for Polish Science which has been operating since 1991 and is the biggest non-budgetary financing source of science in Poland. Professor was among a group of 13 selected scientists who received funds for implementation of project promoting science. As can be read on the FNP website (www.fnp.org.pl) the Foundation announced the results of the first edition eNgage contest organized in the framework of SKILLS FNP project. The main objective of eNgage contest is to develop skills in science popularization or presentation of scientific results dedicated to different non-scientific target groups, mainly to youth and students.
According to the article of assoc. prof. Stanisław Różański – landmark discoveries were made in the last decade of the 21st century – in the field of new materials as well as related to the structure of micro- and macro-world. The research on graphene was conducted, Bose-Einstein condensate’s properties were examined, accelerating expansion of the world through supernovae observations was explored and there were many experiments related to the interpretation of Quantum mechanics through the ability of manipulating single, quantum objects. Building the biggest measurement instrument in the world, which is the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), enabled an experimental confirmation of the Higgs mechanism concept and the observation of the Higgs boson. Thereby confirming the Standard Model as being correct. That will lead to better understanding of the material world’s creation and the universe which surrounds us. These and the others spectacular achievements in science need to be increasingly popularized among people who are not directly associated with scientific research, especially among learners and students.
The project, which will be managed in the form of multimedia lectures illustrated by experiments, is intended for learners of middle and secondary schools and for students. Apart from lectures, two interactive exhibitions, devoted to renewable energy sources, will be organized. The lectures will be recorded and films presenting conducted experiments will be available on project’s Facebook page. The participants of lectures and shows will have an opportunity to share their observations and opinions by means of social media. After every lecture, the competitions with prizes will be held.
Multimedia lecture illustrated by experiments on liquid nitrogen and dry ice. Information about the behavior of matter in low temperatures. The discovery of superconductivity by Kamerlingh Onnes, the role of the Polish scientists Wróblewski and Olszewski in condensation of oxygen and nitrogen, I and II Type of superconductivity, high-temperature superconductivity, The Meissner effect, BCS theory, Josephson junction, the use of low temperatures in technique, e.g. superconductive magnets in the Large Hadron Collider will be discussed.
Lecture and show inspired by the resolution of the UN General Assembly stating that the year 2015 will be the International Year of Light and Light-based Technologies. During lecture basic topics such as Quantum mechanics – Planck’s law, Stefan-Boltzmann law, Wien’s displacement law, Bohr model, the spectrum of atomic hydrogen, the photoelectric effect, Compton scattering, photons as exchange particles, polarization of light, the laser construction and its use, transmission of information, fibres, holography (M. Wolfke) will be presented.
The basic information about the mechanical waves with particular focus on sound waves will be discussed. Issues such as: diffraction and interference, sound waves reflection, echo, reverberation, beats, Doppler effect, longitudinal and transverse wave, timbre, pitch, sound intensity, musical instruments, spectral analysis of sound waves – Fourier transform, waves on the water surface.
During lecture the following issues will be discussed: thermotropic and lyotropic liquid crystals, liquid crystals in biological systems, pioneering work of Mięsowicz, nematic, chiral and smectic phase, optical properties of liquid crystals, liquid crystals in contact with a surface, the influence of magnetic field on liquid crystal structure, liquid crystal display construction on the example of TV-screen.
The energy issues of the modern word as well as the negative effects of the growth of civilization in the form of greenhouse gases production have contributed to the intensified searching of clean and green energy sources that might be an alternative to the coal or crude oil. The latest achievements in science are used in production of photovoltaic cells, fuel cells or a wind farm. In order to familiarize learners and students with the alternative energy sources, an interactive exhibition will be organised, during which one may see how some of the renewable energy sources work.
